As you can see from this picture, Nathan would sit in his high chair, open his mouth and wait for mommy to bring him a spoon full of yummy food. What's wrong with this picture? Nathan really hasn't been actively participating beyond chewing and that had to change. I had no idea.
We now have to bring the spoon to him but not to his mouth. Now, I bring it just in front of him - at which point he has to sit up and actively place his mouth around the spoon and/or hold the spoon and feed himself. Well, this didn't go over so well at first.
But, Nathan got the hang of it after a while. It was the battle of the wills and knowing it was for his own good - I persisted. In the below picture you can see he's sitting up to get the food ~ BINGO.
After a few bites he even began to feed himself. Way to go Nathan!
The next morning the therapist wanted to show me "the new technique" so that I could begin implementing it. I told her, that I had already begun to do that yesterday. When she began to feed Nathan he was actively participating in the process and she couldn't believe it! She said, "he wasn't doing this yesterday." Yeah, I know. That's my little star!
We're also working on some other things but that's another post for another day!
